Step One - Open Fireworks. When first opened Fireworks never gives you a blank page. Go to "File,” select "Open,” select a 500 X 500 pixel page, resolution 72, select "transparent radio button," and OK.

Step Two - Set up all needed palettes "Window" menu, select "Tools, Properties, Optimize, Layers, and Styles." Move the toolbars to the left of your document, and place the others on the right. The "Property Inspector " contains all options for changing text. If the Property Inspector is minimized click the bottom, right arrow to expand. Through the "Property Inspector" you can change size, font, spacing, alignment, leading, stroke, fill, and live effects A style contains built-in styles for text and graphics. A style can include attributes such as font, point size, color, fills, stroke or effect.

Step Three To create a rollover go to the "Edit Menu”, scroll down and select "Insert," Insert Button." In the "Button dialogue box" select the Up tab. The Up state is the normal setting of the button. Using the drawing and editing tools to create the Up state of the button.

Step Four Select the "Over Tab.” The Over state displays when your cursor is over the button. Either use the drawing and editing tools or select the Copy Up Graphic” button and change its attributes to create the Over state of the button.

Step Five Select the "Active Area tab.” Make sure "Set Active Area Automatically” is checked on the top left of the dialogue box. The active area is the hit area of the button and is defined by a slice object linked to the button. (Optional) Use the link wizard on the bottom left of the dialogue box to define the URL and other link properties.

Step Six Close the Button Dialogue Box.

Step Seven Go to "Modify" Menu, scroll and select "Canvas, Trim Canvas.”

Step Eight - To save the graphic as a PNG, go to the "File” menu and select Save,” find the RAW folder inside of your site folder, retain the PNG extension and type a name, (e.g. button.png) select OK.”

Step Ten - To export the graphic as GIF or JPG, go to the "File” menu and select "Export Preview.” In the Export Preview dialogue box, select the GIF in the Format pop-up menu. Use the preview window to preview up to four previews comparing the file size and download estimated times for each preview.

Step Eleven - Select the "Export Button.” In the Export dialogue box find your SITE folder, retain the htm extension in the Name area and type a name, (button.htm). Under "Save As," select "HTML and Images." Under HTML select "Export HTML File." Under Slices select "Export Slices. " Check "Put Images in Subfolder," select the "Browse" button and scroll to select the ICON folder in your site folder Select "Save"..
